About us
The year was 1957 and Marland E. Richter found himself at 42 years old out of a job. He was coping with the separation of a partnership in the floor covering business he had help build into a successful company. His decision was to start over in his own business as the sole owner this time. He had a twenty year old son to help him but the question was "where to locate?" After a lot of looking at older buildings and locations in and around the city of Chillicothe he began to think about North Bridge St. He found a lot he could buy but was somewhat concerned that it was a little far out of town. In 1957 there were few businesses on North Bridge St. and a lot of the ground was still farmed. Marland felt that the growth of the city would be to the North if and when it came. He also felt that parking for his customers was of utmost importance as his products were mostly very bulky and heavy as his new store was to be again a floor covering store in conjunction with the sale of factory made kitchen and bath cabinets. So Marland Richter bought his lot, actually cut corn off the lot, found a builder and started construction in the summer of
1957. The new store opened on Jan. 30, l958 with Marland, his son Dick, and one floor covering installer. Marland felt that the building contractor business was very important so he set opening time at 7:30 AM and to serve other customers we stayed open till 9:00 PM for the first year or so. Marland and Dick alternated evening working hours. Seeing that the year 1958 was in the middle of one of the worse recessions in history the long hours along with excellent service and new discounted pricing paid off and the business began a long successful history of business on Bridge St. Marland continued to manage the business until about 1981 when he started to step down and turned the day to day management over to his son Dick. The company went through eight expansions with the addition of new buildings as needed from 1958 with the most current building being a new showroom in 1980.
Dick Richter continued to manage the company until December of 1999 when he retired from full time and turned the management of the company over to his son Rich Richter, the third generation to now guide the company.
Rick's is not only managed by the third generation but the company is doing business with second and third generations of our original customers.
Marland E. Richter was right. The expansion for the city was and is out North Bridge Street.
